Daniel Gaines
Daniel Gaines, a 2017 Vision Fellow, is currently pursuing a dual Ph.D. in philosophy and criminology and criminal justice, alongside a master's degree in applied statistics. He previously attended Clark University, where he earned a BA in philosophy and a master of public administration. Most recently, Daniel completed his MA in philosophy at Western Michigan University. During his time there, he was awarded a fully funded graduate assistantship and the Mark Roachan Scholarship.
Daniel’s current research bridges the gap between moral philosophy, the criminal justice system, and advanced technology. He explores the intersection between ethics and the criminal justice system, with a particular focus on how the reasonable person standard is applied in the law. To support his theoretical work, Daniel leverages quantitative criminology, exploring how advanced statistics, complex systems, and artificial intelligence and machine learning can be applied to analyze and understand the judicial system.
